Headcodes carried by trains combining/splitting en-route
Where a train divides/joins en-route, each portion of the train will carry the headcode appropriate to its entire journey. Once combined, the train will carry the appropriate headcode relating to the front portion of the train.
For example, a service from Victoria to Portsmouth Harbour (front) and Bognor Regis (rear) via Redhill & Horsham will carry the following codes :
Headcode |
Route |
| 18 | Victoria - Barnham (Whole Train) |
| 18 | Barnham - Portsmouth (Front portion) |
| 16 | Barnham - Bognor Regis (Rear portion) |
In the reverse direction, the headcode from Barnham to Victoria will be 16, as the Bognor Regis portion is the front of the train.
NB In many cases, the railtrack passenger timetable does not show the correct headcode for the rear portions of trains dividing en-route.
Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) services
Headcode "square" (two white squares) is frequently used for ECS services on pre-networker stock.
Other Notes
Headcodes are allocated to virtually all passenger services operated on the former Southern region, however not all stock is capable of showing such codes (Classes 159, 442 and most South Central 455s). Thus some codes may rarely be seen in practice.
Headcodes 00 to 09 are not the same as 0 to 9. Hence it is in fact possible to show 111 different headcodes (0 to 9 and 00 to 99 and "square"). In the case of services operated by Thames Trains and Chiltern Railways, single digit codes are not used.
Many headcodes apply to services for a range of destinations. For example, headcode 91 is used by fast services from Waterloo to Weymouth, but is also used by any service from Waterloo to Southampton or any station west thereof. Where this is the case, the range of destinations is shown as in the example below :
Headcode |
Route |
| 91 | Waterloo - Southampton/Weymouth (fast) |
Where no headcode exists for a particular service, the train shows the headcode for the shortest service of which it is entirely part. For example, the Brighton - Hove shuttle service uses headcode 65 (Brighton - West Worthing).
Gatwick Express has ceased using the booked route codes, all services running with headcode "square" instead.
Since May 1997 the meaning of many of the following headcodes has become blurred.
When services are diverted to Paddington, the appropriate code for the equivalent service from Marylebone is used.

Traditionally, for services to/from London, ODD numbers are normally used for services to/via London Bridge, with EVEN numbers for services serving Victoria. There are a few exceptions.
Codes marked [1] operate in the direction stated only
Codes marked OOU are currently out of use. These codes may see occasional use if slam-door stock substitutes for the normally rostered units.

Headcodes are comprised of the last two digits of the train reporting number, and do not signify particular routes.
In General, the First digit indicates the destination, the Second digit showing the stopping pattern :
Headcode |
